In its role as Swiss regulatory authority, since 2001 OFCOM has performed various measurement campaigns. The results showed that the limit values of the applicable reference standard, NB30, were markedly exceeded by internal and external PLC equipment. On the basis of the results, the question is raised as to whether such equipment meets the fundamental requirements of the European Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive.
Upon activation of the EMC functionality, it became evident that the new generation of PLC equipment is capable of suppressing PLC carriers in the affected frequency range to levels well below the NB30 limit values. It would appear that this so-called "notching" is an appropriate method for greatly reducing the interference potential on the one hand and for remedying cases of interference on the other.
