In principle, any telecommunications equipment must fulfil the essential requirements which enable it to be placed on the market without interfering with the telecommunications network. For PLC, the relevant concerns are electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrical safety. These essential requirements are laid down in standards. Narrowband PLC technology is based on the EN 50065 standard; for the time being, there are as yet no international standards for broadband PLC. In order to use all the possibilities of this new technology, further standards will have to be drawn up at the international level.
