Exemption of recipients of supplementary benefits

Only recipients of annual basic state pensions (AHV or IV) who receive benefits according to the Federal law on supplementary social insurance benefits related to old age, surviving dependents and invalidity insurance may be exempted from the obligation to pay fees for radio and television reception.

  • Requirements: this person will be exempted from the obligation to pay on written application. The applicant must present a legally valid decision on the award of supplementary benefit. The exemption applies not only to the exempted person but also to the entire household in which he or she lives. After exemption from the obligation, Billag AG has to verify regularly the conditions for exemption. There is no entitlement to exemption from the obligation to pay fees in the case of receipt of cantonal supplementary benefits only.
  • Timing of the application: it is advisable to apply to Billag AG for exemption from the obligation to pay fees at the same time as submitting the application for supplementary benefits to the competent insurance benefits office. Billag AG can deal with the application only when there is a decision on the award of supplementary benefits.
  • Commencement of exemption: the exemption from the obligation to pay fees can begin from the month after the application at the earliest. Retroactive exemption is not possible. Example: submission of the application to Billag AG on 6.08.2004, exemption of 1.09.2004 on the grounds of a legally valid supplementary benefits decision dated 1.01.2003.
