Essential requirements

Equipment must be designed and manufactured according to the state of the art such that:

  • the electromagnetic interference it causes does not reach a level which may make it impossible to operate telecommunications equipment or other equipment in accordance with its intended use;
  • it is sufficiently insensitive to electromagnetic interference when operated according to the intended use without unacceptable adverse effects.

The fundamental requirements are implemented in the technical standards drawn up by the European committees. These standards are adopted by Switzerland and are published by OFCOM as a list in the federal gazette.

The two handbooks CENELEC Guide 24 and CENELEC Guide 25, which are published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation (CENELEC), provide information about the technical standards in relation to electromagnetic compatibility. The two handbooks are available only in English.
