Renewal of GSM licences out for consultation

Biel-Bienne, 30.05.2006 - On behalf of the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom), the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) has launched a public consultation on the renewal of the GSM licences of Swisscom Mobile SA, Orange Communications SA and TDC Switzerland SA.

The GSM mobile telephony licences, awarded for a period of 10 years to Swisscom Mobile SA, Orange Communications SA and TDC Switzerland SA, will expire on 31 May 2008. Before they are renewed, it appears wise to analyse the preferences, wishes and comments of interested parties. On behalf of the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom), the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) is therefore carrying out a public consultation which will last until 23 June 2006.
As early as the end of 2005, ComCom examined the situation following the expiry of these three GSM mobile telephony licences. In spring 2006, it decided to consider renewing the three licences.

However, ComCom will not pronounce definitively on the renewal of the licences and their content until after the current consultation of interested parties.

The documents relating to the consultation are available on the OFCOM website or can be obtained by writing to OFCOM.
