Broadband services

The broadband services index for average users (the least expensive products with downlink data rates equal to or greater than 25 Mbit/s) fell 3.3% compared with the previous year. The average data rate of the products selected for an average user was 44 Mbit/s.

A different evolution according to the user profiles

Between 2017 and 2018, the charges incurred by an average user for broadband services fell by 3.3%. Those paid by a heavy user also (-3.4%). These falls are mainly due to the prices decreases made by cable operators, which now replicate the price levels offered by their main competitors active in the market and offering DSL. On the other hand, the small user sees his bill increasing (+0.8%). The reason is to be found in the increase in prices of subscriber connections implemented by cable operators. We can still see that in general speeds tended to increase in 2018.

Differences between operators

As in 2017, 2018 was characterised by price differences between providers, especially between those that use different access technologies. As a general rule, for a given data rate, cable network operators offer better value products, but differences have been narrowing for several years now. Sunrise has the most affordable offering in the DSL segment for data rates in excess of or equal to 25 Mbit/s. Comparing the prices of the dominant providers (i.e. Swisscom and UPC) in each segment (DSL and CATV) Swisscom’s offering for an average user was approximately CHF 1 more expensive in 2018.

Reduction in the Mbit/s price index

The combination of faster data rates and a reduction in prices has resulted in the standardised Mbit/s price index falling for light and average users. The index fell 5.3% compared with the previous year for an average user. It should be noted that all the providers currently offer products with downlink data rates of 100 Mbit/s and more. Some of them are even marketing downlink data rates up to 1 Gbit/s in cases where optical fibre is available to the home or to the business.
