Media Structure Report
The Media Structure Report analyses the development of television, radio, online media, and now also the press in the Swiss media landscape. For each of these media types, it provides an overview of the offerings and organizations, financing, content, and usage. The report not only tracks long-term developments in the Swiss media landscape but also provides a robust foundation for policy decisions regarding the future of media in Switzerland.
Every two years, OFCOM updates key data and indicators on developments in the Swiss media landscape and publishes the Media Structure Report. The report fulfils the legal mandate (Art. 19 RTVA) to compile an overview of the Swiss media market and make it publicly available.
The Structure Report as an interactive, digital publication
The Structure Report 2025 was created using the federal government's Open Government Data (OGD) infrastructure. All data is available on LINDAS. LINDAS is a linked data service that enables the publication of open data from the federal administration and is provided by the Swiss Federal Archives SFA.
The visualizations were created using Visualize, which was developed by the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN. Visualize enables the visualization of open government data provided by LINDAS.
All visualizations include comprehensive, transparent information about the data sources used. At the same time, the interactive visualizations offer a wide range of options for exploring the data independently:
- Selection and comparison of categories, e.g. to compare individual media or programs
- Adjustment of the timeline to focus on specific periods
- Filter functions, e.g. for the whole of Switzerland or individual language regions
- Detailed information on data sources, contact points, and creation date (under “Details”)
- Downloading the data in XLSX or CSV format for your own analysis (under “Details”)
- Options for further use: table view, image export (PNG), sharing, embedding, or copying for individual customization (below the three dots at the top right of the graphics)
The report contains a summary of the most recently updated data (2025), structured into the subject areas mentioned above. Click on a tile below to explore the key findings across all media types:
Key findings: Offerings and organisations
A diversity of available information is necessary for the democratic formation of opinion. It is therefore important to know how many offerings exist per media type (diversity of offerings), who owns them (diversity of providers), and how both aspects have developed.
Key findings: Financing
Media are financed from various sources. Which sources of financing are important for the different media types – and how have they developed in recent years?
Key findings: Content
Media in Switzerland are free to design their content (programming autonomy). Nevertheless, it is important to know what components and topics their offerings consist of – and how their focus has developed.
Key findings: Usage
The use of media plays an important role in the everyday life of the Swiss population. How has usage developed – and what differences can be seen, for example, between different age groups?
Previous versions
The reports are available in German, French and Italian.
