Enabling communication – strengthening diversity
As the federal government’s competence center for media and telecommunications, OFCOM ensures free, secure and diverse access to communication in Switzerland. It also plays an important role in the field of digitalisation. We create framework conditions that promote innovation, protect fundamental rights and support the digital transformation in a responsible manner. We are also committed to an independent, diverse and high-quality media landscape in Switzerland.
In Focus

Media Structure Report
The Media Structure Report analyses the development of television, radio, online media, and now also the press in the Swiss media landscape. For each of these media types, it provides an overview of the offerings and organizations, financing, content, and usage. The report not only tracks long-term developments in the Swiss media landscape but also provides a robust foundation for policy decisions regarding the future of media in Switzerland.

New law on communication platforms and search engines
The Federal Council wants to strengthen the rights of users in the digital space and oblige very large online platforms and search engines to be more fair and transparent. A new law is to define core rules for services such as Facebook, X, TikTok or Google in law.

Stories from everyday digital life
The prevention campaign 'Stories from everyday digital life' run by a number of federal agencies and Swiss Crime Prevention aims to raise public awareness about responsible online behaviour and encourage a healthy approach to mobile phones, computers and managing one's own data. OFCOM is leading this national campaign with a comics series. The comics about the Webster family are published in all four national languages and in English. They provide teachers, parents and grandparents with a basis for discussion with young people about everyday digital life, as well as offering practical advice.

Award of mobile telephony frequencies
The Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) has instructed the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) to prepare for awarding the mobile radio frequencies that will become available in 2029. In the interests of competition and transparency, ComCom is planning a public tender for these frequencies, probably in 2026. Frequencies from the 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz and 2600 MHz bands, which were acquired by Swiss mobile network operators in 2012, will be allocated. They comprise a good half of the mobile frequencies currently allocated. The corresponding licences will expire at the end of 2028.

Mobile communications: evolution towards 5G
Every year the volume of data exchanged on the mobile network doubles. The introduction of the 3rd generation 3G (UMTS) in the middle of the 2000s, and then the rollout of the 4th generation 4G (LTE) from 2012 onwards made it possible to cover requirements, until now. These technologies, however, are now reaching their limits. The introduction of 5G will make it possible to appreciably increase data transmission capacities.

Switzerland welcomes UN commitment to inclusive digital governance
During the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20), a high-level UN meeting on the future of the internet and digital cooperation, the international community reaffirmed its commitment to an open and inclusive information society that respects human rights. Switzerland welcomes this strategic decision, which is in line with its commitment to a digital environment that benefits everyone.
Faster to stable mobile networks
Mobile communications are indispensable for the public and the economy. To facilitate the expansion of communication networks, the Federal Council intends to amend the procedure for commissioning mobile phone masts. On 12 December, it launched a consultation on a revision of the Telecommunications Act. The bill creates the necessary framework conditions to provide reliable mobile phone coverage and protect the public and the environment. The consultation closes on 31 March 2026.
