In brief

What is the information society?

The information society can be seen as the state of a society in which information and communication technologies play a leading role, in economic, social and cultural affairs. This concept covers technical innovations, changes in practice and behaviour and the way in which information and knowledge are transmitted.

The information society in Switzerland

In Switzerland as elsewhere, the digitisation of life continues, with mobility of information, interconnection of communications networks and the use of communication technologies to tackle ever more complex tasks.
In relation to the information society, the Federal Council is pursuing clear economic and socio-political goals: it wants to make use of the opportunities offered by ICT to support the cohesion of the regions, strengthen Switzerland's appeal as a location for business and maintain the quality of life of the population at a high level. In all economic and political sectors, ICT can help meet current and future societal challenges.
