PAD

Acronym for Program Associated Data. Associated data services are transmitted from a radio station at the same time as the radio programme (e.g. title and description of the piece of music in real time).

Pay programme

A pay programme is broadcast in encrypted form and can only be accessed with a suitable piece of equipment (set-top box or DAB receiver) after payment has been made (registration with a smart card).

Pay-per-View

New form of programme enabling the subscriber to select individual programmes which must then be paid for.

Pixel

Smallest picture element on a display screen. A standard television image in PAL has about 120,000 pixels.

Portable reception

Portable reception is the name given to the mobile reception of broadcasting signals using portable, mobile receivers (portable radio, Walkman, etc.).

Portable in-house reception

Portable in-house reception permits the portable reception of broadcast programmes in the home. Reception is by means of the receiver's small rod antenna and not, as previously, via a fixed external antenna.

QAM, Quadrature Amplitude Modulation

Modulation technique for transmitting digital signals. Mainly used for cable transmission and in conjunction with OFDM for terrestrial transmission.

QPSK, Quadrature Phase Shift Keying

Modulation technique for digital signals with four phases, each with a 90-degree phase shift. Used in satellite transmission and terrestrial transmission (in conjunction with OFDM).
