OFCOM actively involved in "Industry 2025"

The Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) is collaborating with the Swiss "Industry 2025" initiative, which seeks to strengthen and promote Swiss industry's competitiveness by exploiting the new information technologies and the development of artificial intelligence. For OFCOM, it is a matter of determining which standards in the telecommunications sector are relevant to the transformation of industry.

The "Industry 2025" platform originated in Switzerland on the initiative of the Swiss Telecommunications Association (Association Suisse des Télécommunications - asut), Swissmem and swissT.net. It is inspired by the “Industry 4.0" concept which enables a transition from mass production of “standard" products to production which is personalised according to customers' wishes and needs, benefitting from the development of new information and communication technologies (ICT).

Regarded as the fourth industrial revolution, this evolution requires resources which, at the Swiss level, fall within OFCOM's competency. The Office ensures that the necessary resources, in terms of addressing resources and the radio spectrum, can be made available and that they are used in accordance with the rules. It is responsible for monitoring the market for telecommunications equipment (including connected objects) and for the electromagnetic compatibility of electrical equipment. OFCOM also intervenes in the event of interference, in order to locate its source and eliminate it. Finally, it provides a link with telecoms standardisation within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
