FM

Acronym for frequency modulation (see also VHF)

Frequency spectrum

The frequency spectrum is divided into different bands which are reserved for different uses in radio and TV:

  • Band I, VHF, 47 to 68 MHz, channels 2 to 4, analogue television
  • Band II, VHF, 87.5 to 108 MHz, VHF radio
  • Band III, VHF, 174 to 230 MHz, channels 5 to 12; up to now, analogue television and DAB (channel 12, soon probably also channel 11); in future: T-DAB and DVB-T
  • Band IV: UHF, 470 to 582 MHz, channels 21 to 34; up to now, analogue; in future digital television
  • Band V: UHF, 582 to 862 MHz, channels 35 to 69: up to now, analogue; in future digital television
  • L band: 1452 to 1492 MHz; frequency range for the local transmission of DAB programmes


IBOC, In Band On Channel

The system used in the USA for the digital transmission of radio signals for mobile reception

IDTV, Integrated Digital TV

TV with integrated receiver for digital signals

L band

Frequency range for the local transmission of DAB programmes (1452 to 1492 MHz).

LCD

Liquid Crystal Display: New liquid crystal screen technology which can currently be used for flat screens with a diagonal screen size of up to 15 inches. Larger screen sizes are technically possible but not yet economically viable.
