Qualitative study on the use of broadband by small businesses (December 2012)

Most small businesses in Switzerland have a broadband connection and regularly use applications such as e-mail and the internet, for example. At present, the main difficulty they encounter lies not in the availability of high-speed broadband infrastructure but in accessing the knowledge and technical know-how needed to make optimal use of the internet. These are some of the findings of a qualitative study carried out by the INFRAS research and consultancy bureau, under a joint mandate from the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) and the State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO).

Study on internet connection and its use in Switzerland

In terms of internet access from home, households in Switzerland favour high-speed connections on fixed networks. This was one of the findings of a survey of internet access and usage commissioned by the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM). The study also revealed that when it comes to choosing an operator the main criterion is service quality. Once a provider has been chosen, users generally remain loyal and are satisfied with the services provided. They enjoy excellent connections and use the internet intensively but relatively conventionally.

Study of the use of mobile telephony services

Mobile telephone users in Switzerland spend an average of CHF 62 per month on the services they use. This figure is the result of a study commissioned by the Federal Office of Communications and performed by the market research and opinion poll institute M.I.S Trend. The study also revealed regional disparities: a third of households in Italian-speaking Switzerland do not have a mobile telephone, whereas the figure for the rest of Switzerland is one in five. In order to collect the data, M.I.S Trend developed a new and innovative sampling procedure based on a random selection of dwellings situated throughout Switzerland.

Use of telecommunications services on the fixed network (August 2005)

In Switzerland, traditional telephony on fixed networks is far from disappearing. Furthermore, residential use of the internet is close to the saturation threshold. In general, Swiss households are extremely satisfied with the quality of their telecommunication services, though somewhat less so regarding the cost of the services. These are some of the results of a survey of users of telecommunication services on fixed networks conducted by the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM).
