Barring access to 090x numbers
The best protection against abuse with regard to 090x numbers is to prevent such numbers from being dialled from your telephone. Every provider must offer its customers the option of placing a bar on calls to 0906 numbers or all 090x numbers. It must be possible for the subscriber to activate and deactivate any bar easily and free of charge. Your provider must inform you of the call-barring options when a new contract is concluded and at least once a year thereafter.

If you are requested to dial an 090x number, especially if there is an assertion of urgency or impending damage, only do so with caution, if at all. Claims that calls to 090x numbers are free, for example, are usually untrue.
Be aware of charges
If the price is not disclosed with the number, you can bring it to the attention of your provider. Inform OFCOM of the situation.
Exercise caution in the case of quiz games
For each call or attempted call, you are paying the per-minute charge and/or the basic charge. This is the case even if there is only a pre-recorded tape or an answering machine at the other end of the line.
