Explanations on overview map

The radio transmitter sites are sub-divided according to the type of radio service.

"Broadcasting":
includes transmitting stations for FM radio (VHF), short-wave radio (HF), medium-wave radio (MF), digital radio ("Digital Audio Broadcasting" DAB) and television.
"Mobile communications (2G, 3G, 4G and 5G)":
includes base stations for 2G (GSM), 3G (UMTS), 4G (LTE) and 5G (NR) mobile communications
GSM = Global System for Mobile Communications
UMTS = Universal Mobile Telecommunications System
LTE = Long Term Evolution
NR = New Radio.

Accuracy of the locations shown

The sites of the installations are recorded by OFCOM for allocating and co-ordinating frequencies. Site co-ordinates accurate to the nearest metre are not necessary for this purpose. It is therefore generally not possible to identify precisely the individual building on which the transmitting antenna is actually installed from the position of the point indicated on the map.
Mobile radio installations which are less than 20 m apart are combined into a single unit.

Additional information on the radio transmitter

A mouse click on a station displays additional information:

  • description of the radio service,
  • radiated power of the installation,
  • in the case of broadcasting stations, extra information on the broadcast channels and frequencies.

Radiated power (ERP):
ERP = effective radiated power
Broadcasting:
The radiated power is given in W (Watt).
Mobile communications :
The radiated power is divided into the following categories:

  • "very low power ": the total output is in the range between 1 and 10 W
  • "low": total power is included between 10 and 100 W
  • "medium": total power is included between 100 and
    1000 W
  • "high": total power is more than 1kW

These power indications are a rough estimate of the effective radiated power (ERP) which is radiated in total at the designated site for the radio service concerned (e.g. radio broadcasting).
Installations with a total radiated power of less than 1 W are not shown on the map.

Total radiated power

To determine the total radiated power of a broadcasting station, in each case the maximum radiated powers of the individual antennas (i.e. all broadcasting antennas at the site concerned) are added together, without taking into account the different transmission directions of the antennas.

In order to determine the total radiated power of a base station for mobile communications, the maximum radiated power of the sector with the highest power (range around main direction of radiation) is first determined for each network operator and for the specified technologies. These maximum sector power values for each individual network operator and for the corresponding frequency band are then added up (without taking into account the different transmission directions). The result is the specified total radiated power.

Installations with a total radiated power of less than 1 W are not shown on the map.
The indicated transmitting powers therefore indicate maximum values.

As for the stations for mobile communications, the radiated power also strongly depends on the number of links to mobile phones at the same time. Therefore, the maximum value given is only reached for a short period every day, if at all.

More detailed information on an individual installation can be obtained from the authorities competent for protection of the environment (canton or municipality).
