WLAN / RLAN

WLAN is the abbreviation of wireless local area network, also called RLAN which is the abbreviation of radio local area network. This system allows an extension of the local area computer network without the need of cable (e.g. wireless internet access in airports with laptops).

4 frequency bands are at disposal for wireless local area networks. The operation of equipment using these frequency bands does not need a license.

The users must amongst other things take care that the maximum radiated power authorised defined in the below mentioned interface regulations is not exceeded (with the use of antenna with gain e.g.).

Placing on the market

All radio equipment (radio transmitters and receivers) have to fulfil the requirements of the Ordinance on telecommunications equipment (FAV) in order to avoid interference to other spectrum users. A telecommunications equipment may be offered for sale, placed on the Swiss market or used under the following conditions:

The above listed conditions have to be fulfilled by the equipment manufacturer and the Swiss distributor. These conditions have also to be fulfilled by individuals who import telecommunications equipment directly.

2.4 GHz frequency band (2.4 - 2.4835 GHz)

Equipment in this frequency band can be used for indoor and outdoor applications. The maximum radiated power is limited to 100 mW.

The requirements applicable to such equipment are described in the radio interface regulation RIR1010-01.

Lower 5 GHz frequency band (5.15 to 5.35 GHz)

This frequency band can only be used for indoor applications. In the sub-band 5.15 to 5.25 GHz, the radiated power should not exceed 200 mW.

In the sub-band 5.25 to 5.35 GHz, the maximum radiated power is limited to 200 mW for equipment provided with TPC (transmit power control) function and to 100 mW for the others. DFS (dynamic frequency selection) is mandatory for all equipment.

The requirements applicable to the equipment are described in the radio interface regulation RIR1010-05.

Higher 5 GHz frequency band (5.47 to 5.725 GHz)

Equipment in this frequency band can be used for indoor and outdoor applications. The maximum radiated power is limited to 1 W for the equipment provided with TPC function and to 500 mW for the others. DFS is mandatory for all equipment.

The requirements applicable to such equipment are described in the radio interface regulation RIR1010-04.

6 GHz frequency band (5.945 - 6.425 GHz)

Equipment operating in this frequency band are divided into two categories:

  • Equipment of type "Low Power Indoor (LPI) WAS/RLAN" with a transmit power up to a maximum of 200 mW e.i.r.p. whose use is restricted exclusively to the interior of buildings (indoor). Caution: Use in vehicles is not permitted.
  • Equipment of type "Very Low Power (VLP) WAS/RLAN" with a transmit power up to a maximum of 25 mW e.i.r.p., which can also be operated outside buildings, but whose use in drones is not permitted.

The requirements applicable to the equipment are described in the radio interface regulation RIR1010-11.
