Essential requirements

Radiocommunications equipment has to fulfill following essential requirements:

  • electrical safety and health (the equipment may not compromise the security of persons, domestical animals and goods);
  • electromagnetic compatibility (the equipment may not generate interferences and must have certain immunity against disturbances);
  • effective use of the spectrum and contribution to an efficiant utilisation in order to avoid interference (the equipment uses only the necessary spectrum for the transmission of the information and limit the emission of nonessential waves).

In certain cases, based on the international practice, OFCOM may require compliance to additional essential requirements for certain equipment type.

Essential requirements are concretized in technical standards by the European committees of standardization. These standards are also applicable in Switzerland and OFCOM publishes the list in the official journal.

Technical interface regulations indicate the applicable standard for each application.
